Steve Jobs - 2007 iPhone Presentation

[youtube &w=640&h=360] I don’t know what brought me to this video, but I am just amazed that things which I do on my iphone everyday were a major breakthrough in 2007. In just 5 years of time, iphone has become part of our lives. It’s very hard to imagine if I don’t have google map on my phone these days, would I print out the driving directions instead? Um… ...

The Aurora Borealis

[youtube &w=560&h=349] A very good explanation of the aurora. Aurora is the mysterious lights that only appear at the north and south poles. You will know why that’s the case after watching this video.

Sam Richards - A Radical Experiment in Empathy

This is a powerful presentation about stepping into someone else’s shoes. The moment you do that, all of a sudden many things that seemed weird before start to make sense. Conflicts seem to be unavoidable yet each side has its own views justified. Beneath the civilized humanity surface lies the same old barbaric force, driving us to obtain a better life at the cost of many others that we conveniently overlook. In the name of goodness, evil practices are allowed. ...

David Brooks: The social animal

I am really captured by this quote: “Emotions are the foundations of reason, because they tell us what to value.” - David Brooks Simply put, your gut feeling drives your reasoning. When we are trying to have an open mind to reason, it’s actually very difficult until we can change our feeling/perspective toward the subject. That means in an open minded discussion, conveying the underlying feeling is the primary goal. Brooks also talks about many other things. Don’t miss out on this video! ...

The future of education

Think about wikipedia and video lessons. Now, the power of that is simple: students can study at their own pace at their own time, thus can actually have interactions with the teacher and their peers at school on perhaps more in-depth discussions. Also with the fun testing games and reward system, the students are more motivated to keep trying without embarrassment. All the learning stats and scores already in the system can be analyzed and plotted into meaningful graphs for the teachers or coaches, the teachers can then decide if they need to intervene and how. Take a look and I hope you will get inspired by it. There is definitely a lot we can do to improve the education system globally. ...

Patricia Kuhl: The linguistic genius of babies

It turns out that babies have only their first year to be native speakers of any languages. Once they pass that period, their language hearing abilities will be set or culture-bound. From then on, it will only get harder and harder to learn new languages. Also, having real people talk in front of the babies yield much better learning results compared to using audio and video devices. This finding suggests that we should spend more time with our babies so they can pick up the language early on. ...

chopping up a video file

There are often file size limits when using any free video hosting services. In my case, I had a 2 Gb mpeg file that I need to chop into two halves. It sounds like a very easy thing to do, but I couldn’t find a way to actually “chop” up the file. Below is how I did it in a copy-and-paste fashion. First download VirtualDub. Oh, and if possible you really want to run this program on a fast computer. Time is precious as always. ...

The Confessions

Would you ever confess over something you have never done? Of course not! Why would you? Now, what if I tell you there were four innocent men confessed to a brutal crime which they had nothing to do with? They were all fine men in their right minds. However, one by one they told confessions to fit whatever the current crime theory was. Even when the actual murderer came forward and confessed he acted alone, these four men continued to testify in court admitting to the crime. The DNA tests came out negative on these four men as well. ...
