Phantom of the Opera)Gillian

To limit bandwidth in osx

There may come a time when you want to limit your http download bandwidth coz it’s taking up all your bandwidth. I came across two apps that try to accomplish this task but I am afraid to say they are too hard to understand. So let’s just do this in the terminal. 1. First, create a pipe/rule that allows 100KB/s sudo ipfw pipe 1 config bw 100KByte/s 2. Then assign that pipe to port 80 which is the remote web server’s http port #. It’s src-port coz the data is coming into your computer. sudo ipfw add 1 pipe 1 src-port 80 ...

Matrix light bulb

Recently I noticed my Matrix low beam light bulb went out. Being a little adventurous, I decided to fix it myself. Someone already posted the steps at http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_change_the_headlight_bulb_on_a_toyota_matrix, but it was all in text. Me being a visual person I feel more secure with a DIY youtube video or pictures. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a shot. First I went to Kragen to get the right light bulb. The part # for the low beam light bulb is 9006, but you don’t need to worry about that. You can simply ask the people there to help you look it up. It cost me $12.01 after tax. Below is a picture of it. ...

Who you are and what they say

This little passage touched a part of my heart when I read it, so I am sharing it here. It’s originally from http://chrisguillebeau.com/3x5/who-you-are-and-what-they-say/ If you are confident, they will say you are arrogant. If you are deliberate, they will say you are too sure of yourself. If you have a sense of purpose, they will say you are self-absorbed. If you know who you are, they will ask, “Who are you, anyway?” ...

pretty_print xml

Imagine you received a huge xml file but without line breaks… It’s one long line… Then you were told to make use of one section of it… I know how to view the xml structure by using the XML Notepad, but I will have problems to copy and paste certain parts of it out. I tried to replace “>” with “>n” and it was a little better at first, but I would then have to manually insert the indentations… I was tempted to write a quick and dirty xml parser… then I was like, I don’t think I am the only one having this issue. ...

Google Refine

Ever worked with messy data? Whenever I get xls or csv files, I won’t be so naive to think that the data is clean. Very often there are trailing spaces or even worse newline characters at the end of certain cells, not to mention typos and stuff. I have to physically go through all data cells to do clean up before getting them into the database. It’s such a pain, and I probably won’t notice anything until errors occur later on. Chances are I missed a few clean ups and now I would have to re-import the dataset into the database again. ...

Fake virus

Here you are not gonna create a virus, but rather create something that will alert your anti-virus program. Here is how to do it. Open up Notepad, paste the following text into it: X5O!P%@AP[4PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H* Then save the file. Your anti-virus program should catch it immediately. If nothing happens, then I say it’s about time to get a new anti-virus program. ;) Ref: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/34677/stupid-geek-tricks-make-your-own-fake-virus-with-notepad/
